Ganpati Bappa looking very happy with his modaks

What’s the point of coming to a food blogger’s house if I do not get modaks, thought Baby Ganpati with a huff. He was at his usual position on the bookshelf to the left of the said blogger, from where he keeps an eye on the blogger while he (the blogger) works

The said blogger finished typing for the day and then spent a couple of hours tidying up and organising the bookshelf in his study What better way to honour the God of knowledge, he thought.

Keeping an eye on me to encourage and bless me

Once done, he (the said blogger) went down to his neighbour’s house for darshan. He offered prayers to the elephant God and a box of malai peda modaks.

The said blogger was typing away the next day, when the bell rang. It was the daughter of his neighbour. She had brought over ukachide modaks made by her mum.

Gannu (an affectionate name for Ganpati Bappa) never looked happier as he munched on his favourite dish.

Ukadiche modaks are the OG modaks

Note: Ukadiche modak is the OG modak. Unlike peda. chocolate, butterscotch, etc modaks, this is largely made in homes. A few Maharashtrian sweet shops in Mumbai offer them these days but those can never match up to the taste of the homemade ones.

If you are lucky like me, then you have kind souls who will make and send you some as did our neighbour Nisha. She had made one lot yesterday but they were finished by the friends of her children before she could send us some. I don’t blame them. The modaks she makes are so good.

The ones she sent today were fabulous as always. The rice flour-based dumpling coating of the modak was thin and not chewy and was crowned with shreds of saffron. The latter is her touch is not a must. The desiccated coconut and jaggery filling inside were fresh, hot and flavour-packed. The correct way to have modaks is to pour some hot tup (ghee) on it and then relish it.

Big thank you to our neighbours the Ramnathkars, for making us a part of what is the 53rd year of the puja at home.
