Tried out some lovely food from Riwayat Mumbai cooked by a home chef named Preeti Sangtani this afternoon. She is Sindhi and was once a caterer who catered for weddings and gala dinners in Ahmedabad. Veg and non-veg both, in case you are wondering. She shut the business when she moved into Mumbai 8 years back.

She started Riwayat Mumbai during the lockdown in September 2020, offering ‘north Indian’ food. This time with a home chef’s sensibility and not a caterer’s. Her daughter Khushboo, told me about her and offered a tasting of their menu which changes every weekend. We tried some of her food today. Lovely north Indian winter specials on a sweaty Mumbai day.

Baby Loaf came to check as I plated the food and I told him about the delicious sarson ke saag, makkai roti and gajar halwa on offer, but like a good Bengali boy he said, ‘daddy pliss. There’s mutton tikki. Aar ki chaee?’

Later I told Didu on the phone that I had makkai ke roti for lunch and remembering her Delhi days, my nonagenarian granny from Kolkata said, “makkai rotir shonge sharsho ka shaag thakbei.”

Grannies know best!
