The headline is tongue in cheek & clickbait. The handles are from Instagram.

Beyond ‘top 20 places you can’t miss’, ‘top 100 chefs in the world,’ ‘6 meals you should have before you die’, lists, lie neighbourhood eateries which are much loved and which exist in a universe of their own. These are hubs for people to meet over good food and happy times. Places where everyone knows each other.

These are the restaurant equivalents of your grandma’s kitchen. Where every meal comes with a story. And loads of joyful calories. It’s not a place to be a fusspot, to comment on the plating of the food or to expect the chef to come out and explain the history, geography, physics & chemistry of a dish. You eat what’s available and eat it without a complaint.

Uh Service charge? These are self service places.

Patience helps. As does being a regular customer. And don’t be shy, you need to be focused and firm about what you want and be vocal for it. Reticence can be a virtue, but this is the real world.

In Bandra, such a place would be @candiescafe

We there went with my mom in law for breakfast today. We saw a couple looking for a table just as we were leaving, and offered them ours.

‘Wait, aren’t you Shormistha’s dad,’ I suddenly asked the gentleman.

Turned out that they were indeed our friend @agentgreenglass AKA @housesofbandra ‘s parents.

They are Delhi’ites who cannot get enough of @candiescafe when visiting their daughter here.

They had come out on a date as Shorms and her husband Anirban @disappearslikesmoke had gone for a walk in town.

Unfortunately for them, it could not be a secret date thanks to a (relatively) young instagrammer who spotted them!
