I went with a couple of my old team mates, Kashi and Nihar, to Red Box at Waterfield Road, Bandra, last week.

The first thing which struck me was that it didn’t have the maddening rush which I used to see there earlier. We got a table quite easily and there were a quite a few empty ones. I don’t know if this was due to the terror attacks a few days back.

We had a lemon and thyme chicken starter which was very very succulent and tasty. It was very well flavoured and there were tiny pieces of garlic stuffed in the chicken. There was a nice dip which went with it.

The chicken satays were nothing to rave about. They were a bit dry and spicy. We kept reaching out for the lemon and thyme chicken!

We were fairly full after our starters and drinks. Plus they guys had shared a falafel wrap wile they were waiting for me.

So we ordered a vegetarian risotto and the three of us nibbled on it. It was fairly bland and boiled cauliflowers aren’t my scene. Nor is risotto, I have realized. I don’t think I have ever liked it. Yesterday I had a spoon from the chicken sausage risotto which a colleague had ordered at the Taj, Blue Diamond, Pune. Didn’t like it. The other stuff that we ordered at the Blue Diamond– penne pesto with pork and pepperoni pizza – were outstanding.

I wouldn’t recommend the Red Box as a place to go to if you want to catch up with people and chat. The music became louder as the night progressed. I think the DJ forgot that he was at a restaurant and not a pub! In fact the hostess told me, while wincing, that it gets louder on weekend.

Still it’s a lively place and the food is good. The average dish price would be Rs 250 – 300 (5-6 USD) while the starters were about Rs 150-180 or 3-4 USD. Drinks are expensive though with a large Indian rum (Old Monk) peg costing me Rs 400 (8 USD)!
