Today was one of the rare Sundays where we didn’t go out for breakfast. Our weekend breakfasts are pretty central to Kainaz and my lives. You would normally find us there at Candies and occasionally at Bagel Shop. Earlier we used to go to Just Around the Corner too.
Today I was at bit of a loose end (Kainaz was fast alseep and I was hungry!). I felt like a poori bhaaji. Then a flash of inspiration struck me and I went over to Sweet Bengal ahead of Pali Naka.
Thankfully, the breakfast stuff came even though it was just ten in the morning.
I picked up:
  • Two koraishuti (peas) kochuri. Kochuri is like a paratha which is made with flour, fried in oil and stuffed with crushed peas. It is served a potato curry
  • a vegetable chop (mashed beetroot, potatoes, and peanuts, coated with bread crumbs and deep fried)
  • 100 grammes bonde (called boondi in Hindi). This is a favoured Bengali breakfast dessert which I had with coffee

I got this home and had it while reading the Sunday papers. All of this cost me about 55 Rs or one USD. In Calcutta it would cost me a third of that.

I felt really good after breakfast and then went to the Khar market and bought sweet water fish which Bengalis are fond of – rui (river carp) and parshe. Kainaz, my Parsi wife is fond of both, especially parshe which they call boi.

A lot has been written about the city of Mumbai in the last few days after the terror attack. Well this is a perfect example of why I love the city. I am a Bengali from the other end of India. And yet one feels so at home here. That, to me, is what Bombay is all about.

Can Mumbai top that?
