Mumbai’s Hazara Restaurant was established in 1947 by Hukamchand Singh Julka who had moved into Mumbai from Hazara, in what was West Punjab then, after the partition.
His son, Harbans Singh Julka, grew the business after him.
Urmila Julka, his wife and daughter in law of the founder, took on the business a decade back after her husband had just passed away.
She was 65 then. Suffering from depression at the lost of her life partner, till she decided to get up and run the restaurant.
“I saw it as a child that my husband had left behind for me to look after,” she says.
In this interview on #FoodocracyForHer you will get to listen from Urmila ji the story behind the restaurant which is said to have given to Mumbai one of its most iconic dishes today, the fish koliwada.
More importantly, you will get to learn about what drives her to come to work everyday at the age of 75, in a talk strewn with pearls of wisdom based on life’s lessons.
I came out of this interview refreshed and revitalised. I can guarantee that you will too.
